Next, I cut, fit and spar varnished some 8" wide x 1/2" thick oak. It was the only hardwood my lumber store had. This interior concept began when I realized I wanted some strong yet attractive backing for my new mast step and various other deck hardware. I am also in the process of backing further with brass strips on the wood. You can also see handrails on the left as you go through the companionway and one on the right to help get stability in the vberth. I also put hammock hooks into the edges of the wood for gear stowage on either side.
